"Donít You Forget About Me........ I mean Villa Angela"
My girlfriend and myself definitely wonít be forgetting about Villa Angela. This place is the brain child of Jim Kerr from Simple Minds, but letís not place all of the kudos on him, what really makes this place is the staff. From the moment we arrived to our departure we were greeted with nothing but smiles and a willingness to help from not only Katharine who heads up the main desk but all the way down to the friendly housekeeping staff that cleaned our rooms each morning. Not only were they full of suggestions of places to eat and drink, they were also on hand when we requested help with everything from booking an excursion to having breakfast delivered to our room so we could enjoy it on one of our two private terraces.
As Iím sure anyone would have noticed if they have read any other reviews of Villa Angela, the location of the hotel is something that has to be seen to be believed, you definitely have to rub your eyes a few times to believe what you seeing when each morning you wake up and the first thing you see through the door out onto your terrace are the slopes of mount Etna, itís a sight to behold. Also to your right is the village of Castelmola which hangs precariously off the cliff top, and down below the ever present beauty of Taormina. During one evening out we ventured up to Castelmola to eat in Gallo Cedrone. Now this place has also been mentioned in many other reviews on Trip Advisor and I can see why, not only was the food amazing but so were our hosts Riccardo and Roberto. Riccardo speaks amazing English and is also one of the friendliest gentlemen you will ever have the pleasure to meet, also dining in the restaurant that night was the retired Police Chief of Castelmola, who is slowly approaching 90 but still took the time to come over to our table and introduce himself. A the end of the night when our bill was presented (which was amazing value at 36 Euros for 3 courses) my girlfriend also received the recipe for Riccardoís cannolis which has been in his family for generations, and to top off the evening Riccardo then went and drove us back to Villa Angela, now Iíd love to hear of any English restaurant manager driving you home at the end of the night.
At current Villa Angela is rated #4 out of 92 hotels in Taormina but I would wage a tidy sum that someday soon it will be #1, and if Mr. Kerr continues to employ staff like he has at the moment it wonít be too far in the future. The staff are a credit to Villa Angela ,and may they continue to be for a long time to come.
